Stephen A. Schantz, MD - Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Procedures Frequently Asked Questions

Mastopexy, or breast lift, is an operation designed to lift and contour breasts that are of abnormal shape. Most mastopexy operations are performed to correct drooping or "ptosis" of the breasts.

Who is a candidate for the Breast Lift procedure?

Women who have sagging breasts due to past pregnancies, weight loss, genetics or aging and desire larger breast.

Are implants sometimes used with a Breast Lift procedure?

Yes we use both saline and silicone implants when it is necessary to provide more breast volume.

How is a breast lift performed?

The design of the incisions can vary, but usually include incisions around the nipple-areolar complex and in the crease under the breast. Other incision techniques may include a vertical lift "lollipop" or a full lift "anchor type." The nipple-areolar complex is repositioned higher, the excess skin is removed, and the breast is reshaped in a pleasing contour and in a more normal position.

How long is the recovery process?

The patient will go home in a bra with only light dressings over the incision lines and will wear it for about 4 weeks. Sutures are removed within 10-14 days and initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. A patient can start light activity in 7-10 days.

Where are Breast Lift operations performed?

Dr. Schantz performs most mastopexy operations as outpatient procedures in our fully accredited in office surgical facility under local anesthesia with monitored intravenous sedation.

Are there risks associated with the Breast Lift procedure?

All surgery involves risk and potential complications. A thorough discussion of the risks and potential benefits of any procedure is an essential part of the preoperative consultative process.
